Cumbria’s geology is unsafe for a GDF; it fails to meet the international guidelines of low relief and simple geology.

NIREX in 1996 also held it was unsafe; we know there are much, much better and SAFER areas elsewhere in the country.

We actually know more about the geology of West Cumbria than almost anywhere else in the UK. It is ironic, almost tragi-comedic, that the only area to have volunteered under MRWS was the only area to have been ruled out before on geological grounds.

Cumbria Trust believes that that it is our local and national interest for there to be undertaken an independent, nationwide geological survey to determine the most geologically suitable areas for a GDF BEFORE volunteers are sought.

We note that Germany has this year introduced legislation to this effect.
